The nitrogen cycle

Follow nitrogen from the air to the soil, into plants and animals, and back again. Tap a form of nitrogen or an arrow to see which bacteria do the work. Pick your exam board for its wording, then quiz yourself or try an exam question.

The nitrogen cycle Ammonium ions, nitrate ions, plant proteins, animal proteins and dead matter sit on a loop, with nitrogen gas outside it. Arrows show each process, coloured by process: fixation, nitrification, uptake and feeding, death and excretion, decomposition and denitrification. A dashed arrow shows fertiliser joining the uptake arrow. The same steps are listed as a table below the map.
